I've fixed the problem, thanks to the help of all the people on this list.
I was using Windows XP Professional which has the guest account turned off by
default (unlike XP home). I turned on the guest account, re-booted and the
printer can be seen on the network.
Thanks again to everyone who helped, especially Mike McMullin who pointed me
to a web site with the answer.
