Still on 8.2, but I guess the same applies for 9.2.
To go directly into console mode, you should not use kdm to log in, but
rather the console.

YaST2 > System > Editor for /etc/sysconfig files > Desktop >
Display manager > DISPLAYMANAGER >
put the 'Setting of DISPLAYMANAGER' to 'console'.

Having logged in into comsole mode, you can use 'startx' to start KDE,
or 'startx <windowmanager>' to go to any WM.
Of course you can use a script or alias to shorten this. For example,
I just enter 'bb' to execute 'startx blackbox'.
