The M-# doesn't seem to be registered to start calc, for some reason. You can still use M-x calc (ESC, then 'x', then write "calc"). You can set up the M-# keystroke in your .emacs file, with global-set-key: (global-set-key "\C-[#" 'calculator) Thing is, for some reason, the calc usage interface doesn't seem to behave as described in the calctut file (/usr/share/doc/packages/emacs-calc/calctut.dvi). I wonder if it even refers to the same extension. For instance, it seems to start in algebraic mode, instead of RPN, and I couldn't find a way of doing RPN at all. Lots of command keys don't seem to match. I was looking forward to playing with an RPN calculator in emacs (my trusty hp-48x still lying around on my desk), and this looked really interesting. The instructions for starting Calc are at: http://www.linbox.com/ucome.rvt?file=/any/doc_distrib/xemacs-21.1.14/calc/c alc_3.html#SEC10 They don't seem to work properly in SuSE 9.2
I can't get a Meta key to work in GNU-Emacs (ie, need M-# c for simple calc, or M-# k for the full version with RPN style calculator input).
So far my searches turn up a (possibly) related question about SuSE, emacs, and Meta keys at http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/help-gnu-emacs/2003-12/msg00356.html Later in this thread comes a suggestion, " M-v is being interpreted in a terminal window as (quote [246]) rather than "\366"."
Another possible lead is [SLE] readline keymap == emacs || emacs-standard || emacs-meta || emacs-ctlx: http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-linux-e/2004-Jan/4211.html This discusses bash keymap options and points to bind as a tool to set a readline editing-mode.
Can someone lead me through the thicket to a solution? You are right if you suspect that I am not a programmer.
