Thanks for all you help Sunny, It was the CD rom drive that was at fault not the DVD. I did everything you suggested of turning off the onboard sound, change the CD and DVD rom drives to cable select and change the DMA setting to see if that made a difference. I took off the CD drive and k3b started to run without a problem although as a user it would not burn a DVD or CD. I booted into root and ram k3b and successfully burnt a DVD and a CD. I rebooted into user and successfully burnt a DVD. I still have not figured out this permissions thing yet ! Thanks again for all you help. -- Clive. Fighting for darker skies. 52.41 N 1.30 W
