Hi, thanks  - I had a look at /var/log/boot.msg and the relevant entry
seems to be:
<7>Probing IDE interface ide1...
<7>ide1: Wait for ready failed before probe !
<4>hdd: DVD-ROM DDU1621, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
<4>ide1 at 0x170-0x177,0x376 on irq 15

Is this something to do with DMA? If so, how do I turn it off for 
/dev/hdc and make it permanent?
