Anders, would that drive be > 120GB? If it is, are you using a 40 or 80 wire IDE ribbon with it? (You must use the 80 wire ribbon for drives > 120 GB)
*smile* Technically speaking, the 40/80 wire ribbon doesn't relate to drive capacity but to bus speed. For ATA33/66 you usually run 40 wires, but for ATA100/133 you need the 80-wire.
OK, but I believe that you cannot do 48-bit IDE on a 40-wire ribbon. I am reasonably sure that 48-bit IDE is an integral part of the ATA-133 standard; I did not know it is also part of ATA-100. The reason I asked was I just helped another guy resolve much the same problem with a 160GB drive. He was getting grub error 25, which is a disk read error. As soon as I clued in and suggested an 80-wire ribbon, the problem went away.
I'll just toss the faulty stuff into the dumpster and go on with my life... Thanks for caring!
Note to self: next time someone asks about this, first make sure to ask if the drive has been tried in another machine :)
