9.2 - KDE and KDE apps very slow - everything else OK

I just got my SuSE 9.2 Pro DVD yesterday and did a fresh install with all the YOU updates on a P4 1.80GHz with 512 MB RAM. I had been running 9.1.

The install went smoothly but starting KDE was horrible. It took around 10 minutes. Several times I killed it off then created a new home directory and started again because I thought it had failed. There were no errors in any logs though. I one point after trying to start it I had to leave my desk for around 20 minutes. When I came back, the whole desktop was loaded. When it had been trying to load I had been looking at the ps aux output and everything seemed normal. It just seemed like it was running with an infinitely low priority. The login screen would come up just fine and the Spash Screen would go past the first item fast then seem to hang on 'initializing system services' for many minutes. Then it would skip the rest of the stuff listed on the Splash Screen and hang at the blue screen with Welcome printed any many different languages and nothing else but the mouse pointer. After many more minutes everything else would come up at once.

I went into YaST and looked at the TimeSlice stuff. Neither were set. I followed the suggestions for desktop use and set them to 10000 and 30000 and rebooted. It seemed to help but now it takes close to 5 minutes to start. Also, KDE apps are slow to start. I tried to start Kate and it was many minutes before it launched. Again, ps aux output looked normal. There was 'kdeinit: kate' as expected. One odd thing, there were two copies of 'kdeinit: kate'. Same thing happened when I secondary-clicked on the task bar and picked Configure Panel. I could see 'kcmshell --caption Panel' (only one copy) in ps aux output but it took nearly five minutes to lock. Changing from one menu to another in Control Center often reacts like this as well. Konsole and every other KDE app I've tried have the same problem.

On the other hand, most non KDE apps like FireFox, Mozilla, ThunderBird, Acrobat Reader, The GIMP, and Ethereal fire up just fine. The one exception is OpenOffice which takes 3-1/2 minutes to start even though '/usr/lib/ooo-1.1/program/soffice.bin -calc' shows up in ps aux the whole time with no problem.

I've been watching CPU and Memory usage. My CPU has gone above 5% and I've never even used swap yet. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Jason Joines
