Well it scared the hell out of me. It is one of those times that you start thinking about your backup procedures. Really hope you are right that it may be a kernel or driver issue.
Yes, I know. I was worried when it happened to me. Have you checked the disk thoroughly? I Googled but couldn't find any consistent explanation, although others have reported the phenomenon too. I also raised the issue in the suse-amd64@suse.com list, but once people had said 'check your disk it's most likely to be harware' and I had checked the disk and it reported OK, they never came back with other suggestions. Maybe I'll try the newsgroups. I expect to move to 9.2 sometime in the new year. It will be interesting to see if the problem persists. It hasn't been a major factor for me - I've seen the problem four times on the machine, which is on most of the time. My system was new in June and I did not experience the problem until 24 November when I had 3 occurrences over two days.
