I want to use the Java WebStart to download a Java program. I installed Java everything with SUSE 9.2. Yet, JWS won't pop up. The executable is set to be executable, but doesn't execute. It's the same file I used when I installed Java myself under SUSE 8.0. It worked fine then. Anyone know where I should look to solve the problem?
Thanks, Don
/usr/bin/javaws linked to /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_05/jre/javaws/javaws works, but /usr/lib/jdk1.5.0/jre/javaws/javaws doesn't. 1.4.2_05 is the one released by SuSE for 9.2, but I think mine was downloaded from Sun and was installed on 9.1 before the upgrade to 9.2. Thanks Sid. Unfortunately, my system appears to look a bit different from yours. I don't have /usr/bin/javaws linked to /usr/lib/j2sdk1.4.2_05/jre/javaws/javaws
I've got this (this is SUSE's doing): /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.05/jre/javaws /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.05/jre/javaws/javaws /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.05/jre/javaws/javaws-l10n.jar /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.05/jre/javaws/javaws.jar /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.05/jre/javaws/javaws.policy /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.05/jre/javaws/javawsbin /usr/share/javaws /usr/share/man/man1/javaws-java-1.4.2-sun.1.gz /usr/share/man/man1/javaws.1.gz
I tried creating a link, as in: ln /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.05/jre/javaws/javaws /usr/bin/javaws
which didn't work.
I ran javawsbin - just to try _something_ - and got: Java Web Start splash screen process exiting ... Bad installation: JAVAWS_HOME not set: No such file or directory
I don't know if that's caused by not running the shell script, or if that's actually a problem that's causing my symptoms.
Don
You are right, now I've seen where SuSE 9.2 has put it and to be sure it doesn't work, the only one that has a javaws that works is in j2sdk1.4.2_05 from Sun. So it looks like SuSE's 1.4.2 and Sun's latest 1.5.0 both have javaws broken. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/install-linux.html "Java Web Start Installation Notes" at the end of the page seems to suggest there shouldn't be a problem, I'll have to see if I can report the problem I have a strace of the bug, it's generating a Zombie process. javaws in any of the alternatives of /usr/lib/jvm/ suffer the same fate. 1979 pts/5 R+ 0:08 | | \_ /usr/lib/java2/jre/javaws/javaws 1980 pts/5 Z+ 0:00 | | \_ [java] <defunct> barrabas:/ftp/dec04 # l -d /usr/lib/jvm/jre* lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 2004-11-08 23:50 /usr/lib/jvm/jre -> /etc/alternatives/jre/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 2004-11-08 23:50 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2 -> /etc/alternatives/jre_1.4.2/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 2004-11-09 12:53 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-1.4.2-sun -> java-1.4.2-sun-1.4.2.05/jre/ lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 25 2004-11-08 23:50 /usr/lib/jvm/jre-sun -> /etc/alternatives/jre_sun/ Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ....
