This is easily prevented by telling kmail not to load external sources - it's in the security section.

Sick with using an external viewer at least that way you deciede if you actually see the images included or just trash them .
What does that accomplish? Nothing but inconvenience. There is no risk to viewing an image whose content is embedded in the message. Furthermore, there's no way in KMail to selectively remove individual MIME components, so "just [trashing] them" would require an external filter to remove the image component of the MIME message that includes it.
