Aren't OOo files like gzip'd tarfiles? My (perhaps lame) theory is that
something munged up the "quick" file type recognition by file extension, so
KDE/konqueror does it the "long" way by looking at the actual file contents,
and so determes that the file appears to be a zip'd data file.
