Hi, Let me share some impressions on running SuSe 9.1 on IBM T42 laptop. As I have lost last three days trying to make everything running, i need to share my frustration with someone ... Lets start with regular SuSe 9.1 - I installed it from DVD then updated using YaST. It is noteworthy that the only reason I decided to abandon gentoo (that I run flawlessly with my previous laptop) was thas T42 is certified to run with SuSe - so I thought: OK, maybe this is not "users distro" but I'll support everything out of the box. Of course,I was wrong. Things that are working/not working with SuSe 9.1 - without modifications (kernel 2.6.5*): Graphics (ATI FireGL Mobile T2): * XFree 4.3.99 + basic "ati" driver (XV, no DRI) * XFree 4.3.99 + fglrx ATI driver (XV + DRI) * Xorg 6.7.0 + bacis "ati" driver (XV, no DRI) Centrino Speedstep (Dothan 735, 1.7 GHz): * Not working - speedstep-centrino module supports only centrino from Banias branch. DVD - multidrve (Matsita DVD-RAM UJ-812) * blanking cdrw wokrs * writteing cdrw does not work * reading data from cd works * reading data from DATA dvd works * reading data from MOOVIE dvd DOES NOT work. Bloototh, Wireless, Irda - not testet yet. Things that are working/not working with SuSe 9.1 - whit kernel 2.6.8 (taken from 9.2 branch update) or kernel 2.6.9 (kernel.org): Graphics (ATI FireGL Mobile T2): * XFree 4.3.99 + basic "ati" driver (XV, no DRI) * XFree 4.3.99 + fglrx ATI driver (XV + DRI) - but FREEZES laptop after restart of X (e. g. kde logout) * Xorg 6.7.0 + bacis "ati" driver (XV, no DRI) * Xorg 6.7.0 + fglrx ATI driver (XV + DRI) - also FREEZES like above. Centrino Speedstep (Dothan 735, 1.7 GHz): * Works OK DVD - multidrve (Matsita DVD-RAM UJ-812) * like above - CAN NOT READ multimedia DVDs (or copy their data to hdd) Bloototh, Wireless, Irda - not testet yet. Not to mension ACPI suspend, which I tested with minor succes with any kernel mensioned. So what is the purpose of certyfying laptop to SuSe ? The fact that some basic functionality is aviable is not to spectacular - everybady could do that. Any way - If You have any comments, advices, hints - whatever I will appreciate them all. I am giving SuSe few days more to surprise me - then I am switching back to gentoo. Probably: thinks will not run flawlessly as well, but at least It will be much easyier to experiment with different solutions. Best Regards, Tomek
