No.  2.6 kernels don't use .o (object) but .ko (kernel object)

For sure that isn't what fixed it.  2.6 will not load an object file.

You have lost me as to what exactly you have done.  You say you 
downloaded the driver (alsa?).  Did you compile it?  Did you just copy 
the module file (.o) from a 2.4 kernel?  Maybe you fixed it accidentally 
by running alsaconf.
