OK, I was right on the first try. I was confused momentarily when I tried to
verify my statement by opening a file in vim and I then didn't see the link
in the fd directory. I thought things had changed in 2.6, but it hasn't, the
link is there, it's just that vim doesn't keep the file open while you edit
it, it just works on the .swp file; I didn't know that, so that threw me
