Hi Carl, The two symptoms in concert: a) dialtone -> ATDTnnn -> no_carrier -> retry-n-times -> CONNECT + b) inability to send/receive mail once connected usually indicates some kind of problem (hw/sw/traffic) at your ISP. That would be my diagnosis if my own phone equipment and wiring hadn't been changed. BTW, whenever I had this problem (I'm on DSL now,) I used to verify my diagnosis by trying a different account and dial-up number from a completely separate ISP. I used free trial accounts (on-line sign-up w/ a credit card and no charges during the first 30 day "trial" period.) I've also been known to use girlfriend's, relatives and work-supplied dial-up numbers and accounts -- whatever I had available -- for quick tests like these. good luck! - Carl
