I, for one, would really like to know the final conclusions on this prob. Be sure to post what you find out, please.
For Peter and anyone else then this is what appears to have happened. For some reason a usually mounted filesystem, that usually lives on its own partition, /dev/hda5, was not mounted under its usual directory name /data1. Why this might be will have to wait for another thread. Even though the usual partition had not been mounted, data was still being saved under the directory /data1, which at this time was just a normal directory on the partition that hold / as well as /tmp and /var. Lots of space was expected to be available in /data1 because it was expected to be mounted to a nice big partition. Now, when lots of data was being saved to /data1 it was going to the wrong partition, which was smaller and, more importantly, needed for other things, like keeping the system running. I suppose, at some point, /data1 would have appeared empty, it not being mounted onto the right partition. This would have been the first, possibly only time that I could have realised that a problem was looming and that something was not being mounted correctly. Thanks to all that helped me find the problem. -- Colin@SpudULike.me.uk As seasons go I especially like pepper.
