Install question?

Suse 9.1 or, so far, 8.x-9.x. I haven't tried 9.2 yet.
Why does the installation program of Suse not detect network
cards and automatically load them? I can understand maybe if
i'm booting off a floppy, but I've been using the boot.iso
for a while now. I usually do FTP installs, but I have to load
the network card manually. Why is that? Why can't the installer
detect the network card and load the drivers?
