Broadcom NIC cards are the devil.
There are problems with Ethernet network cards (PCI) in the 2.6 kernel in general. For instance now I'm compiling the 2.6.8-24 kernel from 9.2 to use with 9.1 because I haven't managed to get any of the following cards working on a dual CPU Tiger 230 T: 3c905B, 3c905C, Intel Ethernet Pro 100 (e100) . Modules were loaded OK but ifconfig reported a large percentage of errors or the cards didn't work at all. Even the "safe kernel options" (acpi=off nosmp ...) didn't help. With 9.2 and "acpi=off apm=off barrier=off noapic" I get full speed but "acpi=off" means I cannot switch off the machines remotely. I think that Novell should publish a frequently updated compatibility list with workarounds till 2.6 stabilizes. The hardware database doesn't help much since these problems probably appear with some chipsets only. -- A.M.
