If I read your original posting correctly your using Suse 9.1 personal
try the same ftp with pub/suse/i386/9.1 I've got
"ftp://ftp.rz.uni-ulm.de//pub/mirrors/suse/i386/9.1";
Sometimes you get a message that some file can't be read can't remember
what the message was exactly just keep trying happens sometime if the
server is busy.
