I wouldn't expect it to touch /home but I would expect it to update for example /usr and not just what's left in /. Surely it won't leave me with an upgraded to 9.2 / and a left as it is /usr, 9.1.IIRC an upgrade present system will not ask for partitioning info as it uses the previous scheme, meaning it should do what you want and expect. I did an upgrade from 9.1 with a separate home and /media/backup (separate disk) and it worked as expected. This is an upgrade, not new, install. New will let you choose partitioning, etc.
