Well folks I found the problem.  Something removed /dev/i2c-[1-3] but 
left the rest 4-31.  Running from the
source "./prog/mkdev/mkdev.sh showed the error.  It created the three 
missing
i2c devices and then "sensors-detect" worked.
Question I have is what removed the /dev/i2c- devices.0
