I can log in as a user as root, but when i try to su from a terminal window as a regular user, it says the password is incorrect.

What does ls -l /bin/su tell you? My guess is it says -rwxr-xr-x Did you select "paranoid" permissions in yast's security settings? If so, log in as root and change it to 'secure'. Very many things will fail to work if you have it set to 'paranoid'
