I had the same thing happen until I did the copy with konsole instead of kde. Then it worked without lockup. Also, when it has locked up, It seems to be the artsd that is actually doing the X lockup from cpu being too busy. I was able to ssh to said box and kill artsd and get my X back. I and several others here have reported Hard Lockups of SUSE 9.2 during data intensive USB 2.0 HD writes. I have yet to hear back from my feedback to SUSE, and no-one has posted any "Solved" emails yet either.
Those solid lock-ups are scary! Use Reisers or other journaling file sys.
