I want to move space from my /home and add it to /.
I was told this proceedure works
tar -jcvpf root-date.tar.bz2 / tar -jcvpf home-date.tar.bz2 /home
fdisk /dev/hdX (delete partitions, create new ones)
mke2fs -j all partitions
cd / tar -jvxpf root-date.tar.bz2 cd /home tar -jvxpf home-date.tar.bz2
All attempts to use this have resulted in dammage to the extended partition requiring me to restore the partitions or remake them with fdisk. It seems this proceedure does not work in Suse 9.1. [...] What program can I buy, steal or download which will do what Suse can not without dammage to my system.
I can reinstall 9.1 on my system but the restore destroys access.
Partition Magic should handle resizing if you're using ext2. There's a program called "resize2fs" or "resizereiserfs" for ext2 and reiser. You may also look into "parted", since you already have backups. I've moved partitions around using parted, and it works well. You'll want to shrink the /home partition using resize2fs, then physically shrink that one and grow the other with parted, and finally grow the / with resize2fs. IMHO. Or just buy partition magic and let ti take care of the problem. It oughtta work. --Danny
