As you can see here (above) is that apt reports correctly that the dependencies are just not match! It is up to the packager (you!) to take attention to take care that all dependency are met. In this case yast may cause problems at the end, as yast does not report (pro-actively/in advance) that problem may arise in the future.
Perhaps it is not nice now for you, you should actually appreciate this very strict dependency checking by apt. Well I do ;)
Does checkinstall offer you the option to obtain the src.rpm? If so add "Provides: libexif.so.9" to the spec file and rebuild the libexif rpm. This may solve the problem for now, but may create (many) other later on as the library is not correct......
That's what I thought was happening. I don't think checkinstall will create a source RPM. The main thing is, gtkcam, xsane, and lots of other SuSE distro programs are compiled with the latest versions of lib's at the time. They generally work with a newer version just fine. When incompatibilities are introduced, the lib maker usually makes it new lib (gtk, gtk2). I tried installing both libexif's and then apt complained that dup's were in the system. I could list that in the duplicats section, but that can get counterproductive also, if I really want to have apt check things for incompatibilies. Checkinstall does provide for a "provides" list, but I haven't found how to make that work to satisfy apt. Checkinstall documentation is almost non-existant. I think there should be a way to specify a lib that is >= a version. The configure scripts for compiles do that sort of check. I don't want to recompile a whole load of programs when I install a new lib, when the new lib works just fine and is not incompatible with the old lib. I agree with apt strictness being generally a very good thing. It has found things that DID need to be fixed.
