I think that some configuration file has been corrupted and I hope someone can help me track it down. One day, I suddenly found that when I attempt to log in the screen goes blank and I'm returned to the login prompt. There doesn't seem to be any error messages (maybe I'm not looking in the right place). On the other hand, if I switch to runlevel 3, do a commandline login and then startx, everything works fine.
Doesn't anyone know what's going on and how I can fix it.
Try logging in, then when you're returned to the login screen, switch to a text console with ctrl-alt-f1, log in and look at the file .xsession-errors in your home directory. Hopefully that will have the error message that prevents you from logging in. Also, /var/log/kdm.log and /var/log/XFree86.0.log might have some clue
Thanks Anders. I logged out and returned to runlevel 5, attempted to log in and it worked. I'm still none the wiser as to what when wrong initially. On the other hand I've found a few entries in the kdm.log similar to that shown below, but I don't know how to interpret them. /home/eddie/.xsession-errors SetClientVersion: 0 8 SetClientVersion: 0 8 SetGrabKeysState - disabled AUDIT: Wed May 26 15:16:53 2004: 4631 X: client 30 rejected from local host Auth name: XDM-AUTHORIZATION-1 ID: -1 SetGrabKeysState - enabled
