And how often does the ntpd client tune its clock (accordingly to the ntpd
server)

But I use ntpdate on my notebook, as it usually is turned off. I have added an item to my desktop menu, to run ntpdate. [snip]
People who only use ntpdate should look into adding adjtimex to the mix. It will adjust the drift using a fixed frequency adjustment and make your clock very accurate indeed. (My internet connected computer (my firewall) keeps time to better than 0.05 seconds per day using adjtimex, whereas without it, it gains 2 seconds a day.) And all it takes to keep it there is a:
/usr/sbin/adjtimex --freq=-2715266
in my /etc/rc.d/boot.local (and the use of ntpdate whenever it occurs to me to use it.) It takes a while to home in on the correct frequency adjustment, but then it seems to stay very constant.
See man adjtimex.
