What are the consequences of disabling hwscan? I am having the same problem on my HP. The yast entry in the runlevel editor says it does configuration, so I'm not to anxious to disable it if it performs any useful functions.

I have probably used/rebooted the box ten or so times in the last day or so ...and so far so good: NO LOCKUPS. I disabled the hardware scan (hwscan), finally, on all runlevels (having experimented with disabling it one level at a time, as well as disabling jobs either side of that). The interesting thing is... it is reports itself as running after every boot. ...But so far that has worked.
