Thanks. I specify ext3 in /etc/fstab but initrd still
mount the root as ext2. I use the kernel come with
SUSE. I don't want to compile a custom kernel, too
many options.

I've never used tune2fs so I don't know what it does but did you check fstab? The filesystem should be mounted as whatever fstab says it is (if it is that).
