For those trying to follow my instructions to build gnome 2.8: As I mentioned, I had a bit of a problem displaying icons. I also found that mime types were not reliably bound to applications. For example, opening a help file on any gnome application would launch the help window, which in turn would launch emacs with the help xml file. Searching the gnome archives, I found that the gnome-mime-data package, from openoffice.org is required to make this all work. Another unlisted dependency. Run scrollkeeper-update after installing the package.
