I had this working perfectly - Grub booting SuSELinux Pro 9.1 and Windows XP Pro. When selecting Linux, the boot process showed in a graphical frame.
My Windows XP needed re-installation, which I did yesterday, no problem. However, Windows XP re-writes the MBR with its own boot loader, so the next time I booted, I went straight into Windows XP. I expected this, so on next boot, I put the SuSE DVD into the drive and booted from there and followed the Installation option. After selecting the UK keyboard, the installation program informs me that there is already a Linux system installed. I select 'Boot installed System' and SuSE 9.1 boots. All fine to here.
Now in SuSE 9.1, I run YaST as root and select Boot Loader Configuration in the System section. I have written Grub back to the MBR, by selecting 'Replace Code in MBR' and clicked Finish.
Now on restarting my PC, the graphical Grub menu appears, whith Linux (Default), Windows, Floppy and Failsafe as options. However, when Linux boots, the booting process is shown in text mode (no graphics frame) and seems to halt half way through.
I can still get Linux to boot by using the SuSE DVD, so my system must be basically OK.
Can anyone advise what I have done wrong with the re-installation of Grub?
Try this, http://susefaq.sourceforge.net/faq/grub.html The Custom Repair/Check Boot Loader config helped me. Jim Flanagan
