I've got a similar problem with an ASUS A7N8X-E that was
"Waiting for mandatory device'. I had admin'ed a static IP
for each of the systemboard's two Ethernet devices. I
tried deleting both interfaces and rebooting(works for
Win98SE) then added one of the interfaces. I rebooted and
the waiting message went away. I rebooted again and did
not see the wait message.
Then I tried using YaST again to configure the second
physical Ethernet device and that worked. I rebooted again
of course. The script /etc/init.d/network is where I think
the setup is run. I've not had time to study it yet. My
favorite debug technique is to place extra echo statements
in scripts so as to know where is the script things are
going.
I notice YaST Network Device->Network Cards has a Virtual
Interface choice under the cHange choice of the first
dialog.
