I think that with 9.1 the issue of a 'compatible laptop' is greatly simplified. Here I have a Toshiba Satellite Pro (with widescreen) and a Centrino chipset and it worked out of the box. Including wireless. I only had to download the firmware for the wireless for some licensing issue.
I said it before: SuSE did a great job with 9.1 in respect of hardware support!
