Anders,
I have to agree with you again - the AS/400 is as stable as anything and runs our SAP without downtime or problems. Printing, telnet, everything with the AS/400 in our business is rock solid.
We have an HP3000 - also rock solid. The older versions of HP-IX are pure Greek. To give you an idea - just for starters - the directory structure works in reverse (as opposed to what Linux/Windows folk are used to). Append to that accounts (as part of the standard file and folder naming conventions - then limit the depth of directories. The newer versions of the OS - called HP-UX have a very nice Linux interface (it is optional and activated by a command). I have limited experience so the HP3000/9000 Pro's out there - dont grill me - this is just stuff I have seen over others' shoulders ;-)
It is quite complex - but man is it powerful and stable. Also pretty hacker proof as far as script kiddies and the rest are concerned. Obviously someone who knows what they are doing... Then again that is not the target of this discussion.
Cheers,
I know that I am a little behind in posting this here, and this isn't necessarily pointed at Jonathan, but are you folks sure that your HP 3000's are running HP-UX? I thought that the OS for the HP 3000's was MPE/iX. The HP 9000's do run HP-UX. Jonathan called it HP-IX on the 3000's, I have never seen that name used, but it would be more accurate that HP-UX. While the machines may be stable, remember that they are on a path for end-of-life as of December 2006. Unless, of course, HP changes their mind again. -- Kelly L.
