i don't use mapped drives, i acces the shared folders via netvork nieighborhood. i also tried mapping a drive and it's the same problem. since i posted the question i also tried it with my laptop with win2000 aind it also doesn't work. the problem is that i have two other folders with the same configuration in smb.conf and i dont see any problems with those two

what is the shared drive letter you are using? if i remember correctly, xp does not like "z", it uses it for smth else.
XP doesn't have a problem using "z" as a drive letter, it is actually the first letter picked when mapping a drive. The problem was with 95 and 98 (and I think NT4.0). They used "z" to run login scripts.
