-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hello. I am attempting to use an external CompUSA USB IDE Hard Disk Enclosure. My system is a Dell Latitude CPi Laptop, with SuSE v8.0 Professional installed. SuSE recognizes the device when it is plugged in. USBView shows this: USB2.0 Storage Device Manufacturer: Cypress Semiconductor Serial Number: xxxxxxxxxxxxx Speed: 12Mb/s (full) USB Version: 2.00 Device Class: 00(>ifc) Device Subclass: 00 Device Protocol: 00 Maximum Default Endpoint Size: 64 Number of Configurations: 1 Vendor Id: 04b4 Product Id: 6830 Revision Number: 0.01 While the device shows USB Version 2.00, it is backwards compatible to v1.1 which is what is supported by both my laptop and SuSE v8.0. hwinfo --usb shows this: 02: USB 101.0: 10a00 Hub [Created at usb.100] Unique ID: B3Fu.kevfIssjghD Hardware Class: hub Model: "USB UHCI Root Hub" Device: "USB UHCI Root Hub" Serial ID: "ece0" USB GUID: 00000000000000000000ece0 USB Device status: driver active ("hub") Speed: 1.5 Mbps 03: SCSI 104.0: 10600 Disk [Created at usb.100] Unique ID: B3Fu.rGuCGBjyIw2 Hardware Class: disk Model: "WDC AC23 40" Vendor: "WDC AC23" Device: "40" Revision: "0 0" Serial ID: "DEF10817C256" USB GUID: 04b468300000def10817c256 Driver: "usb-storage" Device File: /dev/sda Speed: 1.5 Mbps Drive status: no medium Attached to: #2 (Hub) The Model and Vendor entries show the hard drive, a Western Digital IDE drive. Based on information gleened from www.linux-usb.org's USB guide I added an entry to /etc/fstab for the device: /dev/sda /mnt/usbhd ext2 defaults 1 2 I created the mount point in /mnt and attempted to mount the device: mount /mnt/usbhd What I get back is this: mount: /dev/sda is not a valid block device It is very likely that the /etc/fstab entry is wrong, I was guessing as to what to put for the filesystem. The HDD I am using has an NTFS partition on it, but one of the first things I wanted to do once I got the system to recognize the drive was format it. If anyone has any suggestions on what may allow me to mount this device, I would greatly appreciate your help. Have a good day.
