SuSE Technologists, Can anybody help with getting a NIC running in 9.1 on a Compaq 1850R. I have inherited two of these robust servers which I would like to press into service as files servers.
Being aware of the problem with the hwprobe lockup I have disabled (via SmartStart CD V4.22) the onboard NIC (tlan), 9.1 still detects it and auto loads the module, but that is all. Re-enabling the NIC once you have installed the OS only yeilds a lockup during boot. This rules out the onboard NIC totally. The most current ROMpaq has also been applied.
I have fitted a 3c905 (3c59x) NIC but it goes undetected!. 'modinfo' indicates a 'Compaq BIOS problem workaround' is needed via modprobe, but I think this may not work for the 2.6 Kernel. Can someone help?
parm: compaq_device_id:3c59x PCI device ID (Compaq BIOS problem workaround) parm: compaq_irq:3c59x PCI IRQ number (Compaq BIOS problem workaround) parm: compaq_ioaddr:3c59x PCI I/O base address (Compaq BIOS problem workaround)
James Ogley indicates that just simply fitting the a 3c905 will work, I would like know how this was achieved. Several other NICs have been fitted, to varying PCI slots as well. None are detected! The need for a later version of the SmartStart CD with a cfg file suited to the 3c905 may be a solution, support for the 1850r disappears after version 5.x of the CD, the only download (approx 300M) I can find is for V7 and that is on the HP-Compaq site.
Help appreciated. Paul Ketelaar Mackay Queensland Australia.
During SmartStart did you choose the Operating System as either SCO Unix or Linux? Can't remember the options for the 1850Rs and that version of SmartStart so if Linux isn't an option then SCO whatever will do... That should get you going. If you've already done this... hmmm. Stan
