Actually, last dot is not required. Without it, ln wil create a symlink in the current directory, with the same name as the linked file. man ln it helps. SYNOPSIS ln [OPTION]... TARGET [LINK_NAME] DESCRIPTION Create a link to the specified TARGET with optional LINK_NAME. If LINK_NAME is omitted, a link with the same basename as the TARGET is created in the current direc tory. Never just copy paste comands, without caring what they do and how they work. Someone might just advise you to rm -rf /
