You don't have to do it manually on 9.1
Look into /media directory, there should be a directory with cryptic name starting with usb there. Nope. /media/ only contains cdrom/ and floppy/.
If you want to revert to the old way of doing thing, http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2004/05/hmeyer_91_revert_from_subfs.html
I actually came across that article while doing my searches. I like the idea of the subfs auto-mounter, so I don't really want to defeat it. I'd just like it to work! I found what might be another clue. In searching thru the list archives, I saw a message from someone trying to mount a USB stick, and their log excerpt had several lines after the last two in my log:
Jun 30 17:42:47 linux kernel: Initializing USB Mass Storage driver... Jun 30 17:42:47 linux kernel: scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
..which identified the specific device, and referenced the device name (usually sda) which it had been assigned. My log does not contain those lines, so is it possible that the USB Mass Storage Driver crashed while it was attempting to identify and set up the device? ...another possible complication is that this is a USB 2.0 disk enclosure, and I'm plugging it into an older AMD K6-2-450 system that probably only supports USB 1.1. My understanding is that USB 2.0 devices are backwards-compatible with slower ports, and I know I've used a USB 2.0 external DVD reader on my USB 1.1 compatible Dell laptop in the past, but my understanding has proven to have many gaps in it in the past... -- Rick Green "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." -Benjamin Franklin
