kernel 2.6.7 and apcupsd - no go

Prior to kernel 2.6.7, I had apcupsd working with type=backups and
cable=940-0095B.

After 2.6.7 /etc/init.d/apcupsd restart, gives me:

Cannot open UPS port /dev/usb/hiddev0: No such device

However, /dev/usb/hiddev[0-15] do exist.

lsusb and hwinfo --usb neither disclose the APC Backups ES-725.

What do I need to get the kernel to find this device?
