Err, I tried installing ximian desktop and I got an error message saying that it couldn't detect my operating system. I read in a news article that suse 9.1 doesn't support because most of the funcionality is provided through suse rpm's anyway, Is there anyway I can bypass this? (i.e. edit the installer so it thinks i'm running suse 9.0 or something?)
The installer checks the file /etc/SuSE-release, if you really want to fool the installer into thinking you're running 9.0 then edit this file and change 9.1 to 9.0
But I really don't think it's a very good idea. Things are almost certain to not work right if you install the 9.0 packages on a 9.1 machine. The dependencies alone will probably kill you
