Okay, I tried it out, and it attempts to replace a bunch of systemm libraries, so I chickened out, I guess I'll have to wait till the next release of suse for a complete gnome desktop.
XD2 isn't available for SL Pro 9.1.
You can always try the 'experimental' version of XD2 - which may have newer packages and work for you. If I remember correctly you need to follow the normal path to get the installer running, but when it asks you where you wish to install from (RCX, mirror, etc), enter the host in the bottom field of 'herebedragons.ximian.com' and hit next.
Generally the shipping XD2 packages are older than those in SL Pro 9.1. Most of the customisation that was done in XD2 you can do for yourself in SL Pro 9.1.
You could also apply to participate in the 'Novell Linux Desktop' beta program: http://www.novell.com/betaprogram/novellbeta.jsp
