Has anyone used XFCE4 under SuSE 9.1? How did you decide to make XFCE4 available as (a) an option or (b) the default?

The session types are located in /opt/kde3/share/apps/kdm/sessions if you are using KDE and kdm per SUSE defaults. Edit xfce.desktop and rename it to xfce4 or whatever. The relevant lines are at the top of the file:
do you mean that I should rename xfce.desktop xfce4 or xfce4.desktop? Thanks again
Exec=startxfce4 TryExec=startxfce4 Name=XFce4 Name[sv]=Xfce4 Name[xx]=xxXFce4xx
I changed 'em all just to be thorough. It will then show up under the Login menu Session Type list.
