Question: Is there some way to have YoU notify the administrator that a reboot is needed in such cases?
I did the kernel update both a 9.0 and a 9.1 system today, 9.0 with the text interface and the 9.1 with the graphical interface. Both updates generated a popup reminding that a reboot was required.
The problem arises when YoU does the update automatically in the middle of the night. The updates were successful BUT do not take effect until rebooted. It sounds as if you were doing a manual update. I knew we would have to reboot because I saw the alert from SuSE but there may be situations where I miss the alert or perhaps the update was not triggered by an alert.
As I suspected after I sent the first reply. Personally, I do not like to run servers with automatic updates due to installation suprises. All updates are applied and tested to test servers prior to rollout on production boxes. This keeps the environment (computing & support) much happier. -- Patrick Gross Maple Valley, WA
