No sound under 9.1

Can someone please advise me on how to check and correctly configure alsa
sound service for the new SuSE 9.1 release.
This is my current situation:
I had SuSE 9.0 (with updated KDE 3.2 packages) working on my Duron 850 Mhz /
Asus ATVL-VM motherboard and VT82C686 chip set. - And it also works fine with
Knoppix 3.4.
I've installed 9.1 incl. online-updates. My soundcard was recognised by YaST,
but it failed to install the driver.
Using modprobe snd-via82xx - returned:
FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.4-52-default/modules.dep: No such
file or directory
Checking the directories return:
ls /lib/modules
. .. 2.6.4-54.5-default 2.6.4-override-default precompiled scripts
I temporarily resolved the error using
ln -s /lib/modules/2.6.4-54.5-default /lib/modules/2.6.4-52-default
That allowed me to load the driver (manual and by YaST), but still no
sound. Calling rcalsasound start/restart works without error. I can run XMMS
or a CD-player, but no sound at all.
I can start any mixer and adjust their values to the max without any change
on the situation.
Please find some further reports for analyses as PS:
Looking forward for any advise.
Regards,
Rainer Klein
