Ah, come on Preston, this isn't windows, its linux.
When something does not work there are always helpfull messages
spat out somewhere that can give clues on what is needed, or how
it fails.

Tail your logs. Fire it up from a shell.
Press Ctrl-Alt-F10 to see what the log is showing as you
plug it in.
Google: gpilotd "2.6" and see how many hits you get. This has
a long history of problems with the 2.6 kernal.
