DVD not working on Inspiron 1100 (8.2)

I have SuSE 8.2 running (mostly) nicely on a Dell Inspiron 1100. It has
a CD RW/DVD combo drive - QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-242 - which works nicely for
CDs, but I cannot get it to play DVDs.
Any advice appreciated.
