I had similiar problems in KDE with that chip. Try opening up a full-featured
mixer in gnome ( I use KMix & Kmix Sound Mixer applet in KDE ), and adjusting
various mixer levels. I found a couple that were rather cryptic, but
absolutly required for sound playback.

The key one was akin to a "pre-amp" that modifies audio levels before it gets
to the regular volume control.
