Hello, I am trying to install a Netgear PCI MA311 wireless card on SuSE 9.0 and having lots of problems. Anybody knows how to make MA311 work on SuSe 9? The problems are: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- First problem: why does suse think my essid is "test" ? I have set it the the proper name in YAST and I can set it from the command. linux:/home/julie # iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"test" Mode:Master Frequency:2.422GHz Access Point: 00:06:25:A8:0E:55 Bit Rate:11Mb/s Sensitivity=1/3 Retry min limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:121 Missed beacon:0 sit0 no wireless extensions. linux:/home/julie # iwconfig wlan0 essid 'mynetwork' linux:/home/julie # iwconfig lo no wireless extensions. eth0 no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"mynetwork" Mode:Master Frequency:2.422GHz Access Point: 00:06:25:A8:0E:55 Bit Rate:11Mb/s Sensitivity=1/3 Retry min limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Encryption key:off Power Management:off Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0 Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0 Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:846 Missed beacon:0 sit0 no wireless extensions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Second question: why should i need a pcmcia package for a pci nic? linux:/home/julie # ifup wlan0 ERROR: cannot find 'wlanctl-ng': please install package 'pcmcia' ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Third question: what driver should i be using? One website recommended prism2_pci. Suse's site said to use modprobe to determine if the module was loadable? I think I currently have YAST using hostap_pci. in the directory with prism2_pci, I also have orinoco_pci linux:/home/julie # modprobe prism2_pci /lib/modules/2.4.21-99-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/prism2_pci.o: init_module: No such device Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters. You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg /lib/modules/2.4.21-99-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/prism2_pci.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.21-99-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/prism2_pci.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.21-99-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/prism2_pci.o: insmod prism2_pci failed The hostap_pci driver is loaded successfully (modprobe hostap_pci) but I cannot connect either via Ad-hoc or managed mode anyway. Thanks!
