Ah - that worked :) The system now runs X with no problems. The remaining oddity is more of an annoyance than a real problem but: during boot, the system displays the BIOS msgs and then the grub boot menu. However, once booting is under way, the monitor goes to standby until the system starts X (for the login screen). Similarly, the monitor sleeps during system shutdown. Any ideas how to get around this?
